The Harlem Renaissance was a landmark art movement that changed the course of music, literature, and culture. We\u2019re going to explore the history of the Harlem Renaissance by looking at its pioneers. By the end, you\u2019ll know how the Harlem Renaissance started, how it ended, who its leaders were, and why it was so important.<\/p>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">HARLEM RENAISSANCE ERA<\/span><\/h5>\n<h3 class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\">Beginnings of the Harlem Renaissance<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s not hyperbolic to suggest that the Harlem Renaissance was one of the most important social culture movements of the 20th century. Not just in the U.S. but the entire world. But when was the Harlem Renaissance created? Most historians credit 1918 as the birth of the movement.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As for its setting, the Harlem Renaissance began in Harlem, but its cultural reach extended all around the world.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For a quick introduction to the Harlem Renaissance, check out this quick video from Black History in Two Minutes or So.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Harlem Renaissance\" width=\"1060\" height=\"596\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9gboEyrj02g?start=1&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-tag=\"h2\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">So, we know this renaissance was important \u2014 but what exactly was it? Let\u2019s answer that question with a formal Harlem Renaissance definition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element sb-p-sd with-list\" data-tag=\"h2\">\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">WHY DID THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE HAPPEN?<\/span><\/h5>\n<h3 class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\">The road to the Renaissance<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which guaranteed the legal right to freedom for all slaves in the United States. But even though slavery was termed illegal in the South after the Civil War, African Americans still had to contend with hate, bigotry, and discrimination, as well as separate and unequal access to education, healthcare, and childcare.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Because of this, over the following decades, millions of former slaves migrated North in what is now known as \u201cthe first Great Migration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">By the 1920s, hundreds of thousands of black Americans had moved to major urban centers such as New York City, Chicago, and Detroit. But still, albeit indirectly, neighborhoods were mostly segregated. Let\u2019s check out a video by Extra Credits that explores the road leading up to the Harlem Renaissance.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In New York City, Harlem became one of the most populous urban centers for black Americans. Why Harlem? Well, for a few reasons. Harlem was a fairly developed neighborhood, which meant it attracted an educated demographic. Second, it was centrally located; not just because it was in New York City, but because it hosted major landmarks such as the Polo Grounds and the Harlem Opera House. All of this serves to say that there was a lot going on in Harlem, which made it the perfect place for an explosion of art.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">HARLEM RENAISSANCE POETS AND PIONEERS<\/span><\/h5>\n<h3 class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\">Development of the Harlem Renaissance<\/h3>\n<div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-tag=\"h2\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There are too many icons of the Harlem Renaissance to go over here so we\u2019re going to focus on just a few.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>W. E. B. Du Bois<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 a writer, educator, and activist who had enormous influence on not just the black community, but American society as a whole. But as the years went by, Du Bois grew disillusioned by the Renaissance and how it influenced white perception of black communities.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Langston Hughes<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 a writer and social activist who is widely cited as one of the greatest American poets of all-time. Here\u2019s a video about Hughes and his impact from Crash Course.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Langston Hughes and the Harlem Renaissance: Crash Course Literature 215\" width=\"1060\" height=\"596\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ir0URpI9nKQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Hughes left an indelible imprint on the world of literature with his searing prose and tender poetry. His works \u201cThe Negro Speaks of Rivers\u201d and \u201cHarlem\u201d are regarded as masterworks of the\u00a0poetic form.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Zora Neale Hurston<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 a prolific writer and filmmaker who studied anthropology and voodooism. Huston was raised in Eatonville, Florida, one of the first all-black incorporated towns in the United States. Her 1937 novel\u00a0<em>Their Eyes Were Watching God<\/em>\u00a0is widely regarded as one of the most important American novels ever written. His 1925 anthology\u00a0<em class=\"\">The New Negro<\/em>\u00a0is regarded as one of the greatest anthologies ever produced.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Who was Alain Locke?\" width=\"1060\" height=\"596\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KCaE_jQAPa0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The New Negro featured writing from Locke, as well as works from Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and other leaders of the Harlem Renaissance.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Louis Armstrong<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 a trumpeter, singer, and founding father of jazz. He changed the course of music history with his fast-tempo play and lively performances. Check out one of his collaborations with fellow Harlem Renaissance pioneer Duke Ellington below.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Armstrong helped extend the cultural reach of the Harlem Renaissance from urban New York to rural streets all over the world.<\/p>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">HARLEM RENAISSANCE ART AND CULTURE<\/span><\/h5>\n<h3 class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\">Why was the Harlem Renaissance important?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-tag=\"h2\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The allure of Harlem in the 1920s proved to be a blessing and a curse. Although the neighborhood flourished in an artistic and economic sense, it began to deteriorate under the pressure of white patrons, who were often more interested in seeing \u201cthe spectacle\u201d of black culture than helping to \u201cbuild\u201d black culture.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">By the late 1920s, Harlem had become a hotbed for a mixed race social scene. The Savoy Ballroom hosted thousands of customers a night \u2014 and it prided itself on being a \u201cno discrimination\u201d venue. On one hand, there were white patrons who were interested in supporting the cultivation of a new black culture. On the other hand, there were white patrons more interested in the voyeurism of black culture; almost treating it like a novelty rather than a cultural identity.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But by the summer of 1929, these issues were replaced by a uniting anxiety of an impending economic crash.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The stock market crash of 1929 spelled the end of the Harlem Renaissance, not just in New York, but in most places in the U.S. and abroad. Wide-sweeping financial losses forced businesses to close and prompted employees to look elsewhere for work. The bustling cultural center that was Harlem ultimately decayed under the burden of financial distress.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It took decades to rebuild Harlem after the Great Depression \u2014 but the influence of its historic culture is still studied throughout the world today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What was the Harlem Renaissance?
